Angiomyofibroblastoma of the Vulva Sonographic and Computed Tomographic Findings With Pathologic Correlation

Abstract
An angiomyofibroblastoma (AMFB) is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that was initially described by Fletcher et al(1) in 1992. This benign neoplasm has been reported to occur predominantly in the vulvar region of middle-aged women. The histologic features are characterized by alternating hypercellular and hypocellular edematous zones with abundant capillary-type vessels.(1) It is clinically important to distinguish an AMFB from an aggressive angiomyxoma, which is well known to mimic the features of an AMFB. This is because an aggressive angiomyxoma is a more infiltrative neoplasm that has a high propensity for local recurrence in contrast to an AMFB.(1,2) Three prior reports have described the computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of AMFBs developing in the pelvic and perineal regions but not the vulva.(3-5) To date, There has been no report to our knowledge describing the sonographic findings of an AMFB. In addition, previously reported imaging features cannot be distinguished from those of an aggressive angiomyxoma. Here, we present the sonographic and CT findings of an AMFB of the vulva and correlate them with pathologic findings.
